Large Format Book Maximum Sizes
Large format book maximum sizes depend on the binding style you choose. We offer sewn hardcover, sewn perfect bound, and stapled saddle stitch binding.
Saddle-Stitched
The maximum size for a stapled book is 12.2″ x 12.2″ or 310 mm x 310 mm.
This means that we make the book out of folded sheets stacked inside each other, often with an added cover sheet of glossy art paper, and then stapled together down the spine. The name comes from the original process of sewing the pages together with binding thread. This binding is only possible with a page count divisible by four, to a limit of 48 pages.
Sewn Perfect Bound
In portrait orientation, the maximum paperback book size is 9.625″ x 13.5″ or 245 mm x 343 mm. In landscape orientation, the maximum paperback book size is 12.8″ x 12.8″ or 325 mm x 325 mm.
Also known as paperback or softcover binding, this is a popular binding style. We collate and print the interior pages in sets called signatures, which are then sewn together and fixed into a wrap-around cover made of heavier art paper or lightweight card stock. This option gives you a truly beautiful book for a minimal outlay.
Sewn Hardcover
In portrait orientation, the maximum hardcover book size is 9.625″ x 13.5″ or 245 mm x 343 mm. In landscape orientation, the maximum hardcover book size is 12.8″ x 12.8″ or 325 mm x 325 mm.
In this binding, we organize the interior pages into signatures which are then printed, cut, and sewn, and glued into a hard casing covered by a printed sheet or other material which forms the cover. This binding is the most resilient and professional-looking, especially if you add special treatments such as embossed titles, debossed titles, soft touch lamination, and metallic foil stamping; or a custom-made printed dust jacket, a slipcase, marker ribbons, and sewn decorative headbands.
Another aspect of large format book printing and binding is the thickness of the spine. The spine’s thickness is determined by the weight of the paper you choose and the number of pages. As a rule, we can’t print large format books which have over 800 pages. However, if you have a book project of those dimensions, please get in touch and we’ll discuss the options available to you.
Large Format Book Paper Options
Most large format books we print are designed as coffee table, art, or photography books. And they generally include a mix of text, graphics, artwork, or photography. So, whether choosing hardcover, paperback, or stapled binding, you’ll need several papers in the book’s composition. If your book’s content is primarily visual, we recommend printing on premium-quality gloss or matte art paper to get the most vivid and color-faithful results. Gloss and matte both have coated surfaces, perfect for printing that will reproduce your photographs and artwork. Gloss paper is often best for books with full-colour spreads and less text, whereas books with more text may benefit from matte paper. Matte paper will still give excellent colour or black-and-white reproduction while making the text easier to read because it’s less light reflective.
You’ll need at least two paper specifications for your large format book, for the inside pages and the cover. You may also want end sheet paper which can be colored or textured paper. But the choice of end paper depends on the book size and interior page count. For large format book printing and binding, we recommend 170 gsm / 115 lb or 190 gsm / 128 lb uncoated, coloured, or textured stock for the end sheet paper.

Additional Options for Large Format Book Printing and Binding
There are several additional options you can choose when completing the cover design for your paperback or hardcover large format book.
For paperbacks, why not add back and front cover flaps? They add little to the overall cost of production, but they provide extra print space for an author biography, content summaries, review snippets, publisher information, and more.
For hardcover books, you could add a dust jacket or a slipcase.
Large Format Book Dust Jacket
The “dust jacket” makes cost-effective and elegant addition to any large format hardcover book. Used alone or combined with image wrapping, it finishes your book with a professional touch while adding five printable surfaces—front, back, spine, and two inside flaps. We can print it in full colour, gloss coat it, matte coat it; emboss, deboss, laminate, and foil stamp it, too, for added effects.
Slipcases
Slipcases are a fantastic way to add class, style, and extra protection to your large format hardcover books. They are made of stiff card stock like a box, but tailored to the size of your book, with one side left open so that when the book is inserted, only the spine is revealed. They can be made to house one or more books. We can cover the card stock with printed paper, cloth, vinyl, or leatherette as you prefer. The slip case can be printed, embossed, debossed, gilded, and foil stamped, too.
